The Leader as Agent of Change by PM

THE LEADER AS AGENT OF CHANGE
By Mark Smallcombe C3Business Connect May 15 2008

Change

We as leaders and innovators are agents of change
If we are thru changing - we are thru!
One thing I notice about change is that everybody loves talking about it – no one likes doing it
50% of people’s mental energies are spent trying not to change – trying to stay within the safety of our routines
The sound of change is often mixed – some rejoicing, some weeping Ezra 3:10-13
Many see a new thing as a negative rather than a positive – but the first law of possession is separation. Letting go of something to take hold of something else. Change is letting go of the old Isaiah 43:18 Forget the former things do not dwell on the past – see I am doing a new thing!
If we can’t do the first part (forgetting) we can’t embrace the 2nd part (receiving the new thing).
A thing does not have to be bad to be changed. It is just that some things can be better
Like a woman experiencing labor - pain always accompanies change but when the child is born – anguish gives place to joy.
Your job as a leader is to help reduce resistance to change and help people swap the pain for the purpose of the pain

Resistance to change

It will always be necessary to institute change; sometimes it will be necessary to impose it! Never expect all to be comfortable or happy with change. People resist because they are often more prepared to stay with the sameness of the past than to be ruffled into a better future. This is natural but resistance should not be taken personally by the leader but seen as solution and happening as a natural course of events.

Smart ways to implement change

OWNERSHIP: Look for ways to give people the feeling that they have ownership of the change… that change is theirs. When they feel this – they will resist less and respond quicker

VISION: Keep the vision and values at the forefront of all change. They need to see that the change is not benefiting one or two but everybody and the mission of the organization

BITE SIZE: Bring in change in bite size pieces! Release news about the change in small bites. Gradual change is accepted far quicker

PROMOTE BENEFITS: Do not advertise change – advertise benefits! The question about change for many is the question of loss. Alleviate loss by promoting the benefits and the purpose of the change

BUILD RESPECT: Build respect and confidence before you bring change! If leaders do not hold or carry the respect of the people around them they will never be able to successfully bring change

LEAD BY EXAMPLE: Be the first to show and demonstrate your commitment to change

PREPARE THE PROCESS: Explain each step of the change and the process it is bringing - looking ahead to see problems and problem people. Be prepared with answers for concerns.

The Career Person by PM

THE CAREER PERSON

For some reason – Jesus figured that career minded people could make the greatest influencers for God. Some of the first ones HE sought out were those in the maritime industry

He didn’t ask them to leave their careers or their contact with their career partners (although some of them left all to follow Jesus), He shared with them a higher focus and a higher purpose within their career/job – to catch men!

Jesus said – from now on, you will catch men!

In Luke 5 Jesus said to Simon – the owner of the fishing vessel ‘put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch!’

Response was – we’ve worked hard all night – but caught nothing! But because you say so, I will let down the nets.

Respond to the say-so of the Master
Realize that without His direction you will often catch nothing and expend a lot of energy doing so.
So successful were they when they responded the Master that when they read the P&L, (saw the catch) they were astonished

HERE’S the main point

Invest in the people, not just the dream! Deep water is investing in people!

Use the career God has given you to catch men!

Doing Business Supernaturally by PM

Doing Business Supernaturally

The same God who made David and Solomon the Bill Gates & the Warren Buffets of their day is waiting to show Himself strong today on behalf of every business leader who will accept the challenge of a business life led by the Spirit. What would it be like to do business supernaturally (led by the Spirit and seeing supernatural results)? The world has a system that works for those who are willing to work within its parameters, but Jesus instructed us to FIRST seek God’s ways and God’s leadership (the Kingdom) and trust God to give to us what the rest of mankind struggles to obtain – increase – blessing – influence

What are the keys to supernatural increase for you who are called to business?

Build a dream team for wealth acquisition
Create a steady flow of divine appointments
Discover the one revelation that breaks the curse of lack and financial stress forever
Conquer your marketplace niche for the kingdom

What are the four stages to mastery in your field?

Walk in supernatural favor and powerful influence in your field, displaying a spirit of excellence, Learn the secret to praying and mapping your career in prayer Implement strategies for career convergence (the place where your gifting and passion combine in a role you get paid to perform). Create a 'force field analysis' to see how to break Satan's strategy against your business

4 Shifts by PM

SHIFT HAPPENS
4 CURRENT SHIFTS WE NEED TO MAKE
Mark Smallcombe 2008

FROM “HOW TO” – TO “WANT TO”

With so much information & training, its not “an understanding” problem we have – it’s a “desire” problem we have. We assume people will want to “do” if they know how to It is an issue of the mind versus the heart Effective pastors create desire by prophetic vision casting, bold challenge and prayer If you want to deal with the “want to” issue, it requires God’s help. He changes hearts. Pray and call for repentance (change only comes with repentance) and be patient as God begins to change hearts

FROM “COMING” – TO “GOING”

We will never grow by expecting people to come to what we have or to where we are. It’s a faulty idea to believe the world exists for the church or for you. No! You and the church, exists for the world! The action is out there! God has called us as ‘Sent’ people. He said “go out” and compel people to come that my house might be full. It’s not just about enlarging the size of your building or parking lot to have more people come. It’s about enlarging the size of your people so they can carry the mission out to where they live and work. Lost people are like customers who change their attitude when they see you are there for their agenda – not your own. The discipleship process happens as you go out (learning how to take rejection for Christ in the market place or be required to give an answer for your faith) not by staying in comfort of your four walls

FROM “PROTECTION” – TO “PROCLAIMATION”

We will never grow if all we do is try & protect what we have. We have to shift from a ‘fear of loss’ motivation to a ‘hope of gain’ motivation. The church tries to protect itself from the culture and its systems. The end result is trying to legislate our morality. We don’t have to protect God – but joyfully announce His Kingdom and His reign. Stop being fear driven and start being faith driven. Christ was ultimate in his proclamation – by suffering and giving his life for all. Be the hands, feet and voice that takes the message out! When the disciples stayed in Jerusalem trying to protect the good thing they had started – God had to send persecution to get then to start shifting outward so the gospel’s message would be proclaimed in all the earth

FROM “RELEVANCE” – TO “INFLUENCE”

The real purpose of relevance is to have influence. Only for that sake – other wise we become the end in ourselves. Making your church or your company ‘slick’ or ‘with it’ must have the goal of taking the influence of your message beyond where you are – or otherwise its just the “trimmings’ that ends up only influencing those already in the church or business. We have made excellence a goal instead of effectiveness as the goal. Effectiveness gets results which leads to influence. Radical influence is not just ‘Sunday’ influence or workplace influence. Its market place influence. Jesus said we lack wisdom (we play our games like children) in the most important area of influence – the marketplace! A great way to begin influence is to create Kingdom bottom lines and entry points to your business or church E.G. use entry level positions in your company to employ offenders being released from prison – to help them change their lives. This will give you relevance and influence when people find out about it. We can’t tell people how to influence – just humbly coach and inspire them to create entry points for people
